Support for End of Life and Palliative Care (PEoLC) Strategy in Tees Valley

NHS Tees Valley CCG carried out a twelve-week period of patient/public engagement (17 May – 6 August 2021) to understand the views of those who have supported a loved one with a long-term condition or cancer during the end stages of their life.

The purpose of the engagement was to look at how services provided to people who are in the last months of their life, known as end of life and palliative care services are currently delivered and what can be done to improve them so they are patient centred, offering individuals and their families access to collaborative, co-ordinated care.

This work was part of a pilot in the Tees Valley area (Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees and Darlington) by NHS Tees Valley CCG to develop a co-produced strategy for Palliative and End of Life Care (PEoLC) alongside local partners, patients, parent carers and service providers that will guide a transformational programme.

The briefing was specifically in relation to the provision of adults services, however they also engaged with families and partners regarding Specialist Palliative End of Life Care for children and young people and organised separate engagement approaches for that audience which we will communicate shortly. They are seeking to implement seamless care for this group, particularly for those negotiating the transition into adult services. This work will enable this area to be further developed, building on established relationships between children’s services, two specialist children’s hospice facilities and adult palliative care.
